The transition from second grade to third grade often leaves children bewildered at the beginning of a new school year. Third graders are expected to do more for themselves in the areas of organization, completion of assignments, and problem solving. Combine these expectations with the effects of the COVID pandemic and third graders begin to feel stressed about learning. Having a growth mindset empowers students to persevere through challenging situations with grit and determination. The books I have selected for my project will create a growth mindset addition to our classroom library. Students will be able to select books that are on their level and that speak to the challenges they are experiencing. Many times students have a negative outlook on their circumstances whether at school, at home, or on the ball field. This is termed a "fixed mindset" where students are fixed in an "I can't" belief of their abilities. The books selected for project "Growing Lifelong Learners" can be shared with families to address issues that are occurring in the home and to emphasize what students are learning and practicing in the classroom. By providing instruction in growth mindset and teaching students how to "grow" their brains through the acceptance of mistakes and challenges, students learn the power of one word-YET. They learn to keep trying and to believe in themselves which leads to personal success and achievement not only in academics but in relationships, athletics, and community affairs.
