Students rarely learn about history that for many hit close to home or is a direct ancestral historical relation. This book is about two young girls, one is sent away to a Japanese internment camp and another is facing segregation in school. Students will read this book together as a class and have discussions along with history lessons to further expand on the topics described in the book. We will have lessons and discussions about identity and how laws affect us for simply existing. We will also make comparisons to modern events that resonate with this book. These books will continue to be used every year to continue to bring awareness of the unfortunate events that occurred in recent history right here in California.
