Last year our school was remote for the first 2/3rds of the year. It was a stressful period for all of us and it was challenging to find ways to connect with students, nurture learning, and ease anxiety all via a Chromebook. However, I decided that even remotely, I'd still try to train my students in yoga, meditation, and visualization as a way of not only building confidence and camaraderie, but to spark creativity and encourage social-emotional awareness as well. By the time we returned to the classroom in the Spring, my kids were not only showing expertise in balance, focus, and discipline, they were using these techniques independently when they needed to slow down or reframe their thinking. We will be starting the 21-22 school year in person and I would love for each student to have their own yoga mat - not only so we can learn these practices in class, but outdoors as well. My students are low-income learners in a Title I school and I routinely provide much of their required school supplies. Yoga mats would not be something in their personal budgets, but I feel so strongly about the benefits of these practices in helping students to regulate their thinking, feeling, and actions, that I would like for them to all have their own personal mats. Now more than ever, students need social-emotional support as they return to the "normal" classroom. I would LOVE support to realize the goals of this project!
