My goal is to broaden my students' horizon around a variety of books that highlight their background and place in society while meeting key academic goals in Social Studies and English Language Arts. I chose the selected books because I believe I can create small literature circles around the topics of these books, and also discuss the various pieces of history in the books. Students will benefit from these culturally rich books because it will help them better reach learning outcomes such as gathering information and learning how to write informational texts. Integrating media and current events is very important to me. Having proper leveled current events for my students ensure they are getting developmentally appropriate information that highlights good deeds among youth. Students get their news from various outlets, however, a lot of the news is too high level and isn't appropriate for my students. I want students to see other students and be change makers. The goal for the current event sources is for students to be able to integrate different information from various resources and understand the meaning behind the source. Finally, to bring in social justice work and creativity, the Crayola markers will allow students to create vibrant projects and express their ideas learn how social movements started all though a simple sign and phrase.
