My incoming first grade students have been learning at home with their families, in a virtual classroom, or in a physical pod with socially distant spacing. This year will be a healthier and happier year with more opportunities to mingle and connect with others. Social connections are one of the most important pieces in early childhood education. Board games and puzzles bring groups of students together with structure and rules to take turns, cheer each other on, experience the highs of a good turn and coping skills on not finishing first. It gives them a safe space to negotiate but most importantly it gives them time to have fun in their classroom. Our class concludes formal curriculum about 20 minutes before the end of the day to make time for play. We have playdough and fine motor activities but the one area I find students really love is board games and puzzles. My puzzles and board games are well loved and could use some updating. Thank you for supporting my first graders!
