"Where the Red Fern Grows" is a classic novel about a boy saving up to buy hunting dogs during the Great Depression. Although some of the assignments can be done from home, students will be keeping the novels at school to share with another class that I teach. Having a desk copy will enable students to follow along as the teacher or audiobook reads. This way, students can easily refer back to a certain paragraph or text portion. The book will be the central reading text from which we will integrate art projects, history lessons, math problems, reading passages, science tidbits, and relevant writing prompts. The big art focus with this novel is photography. Kids have a great time studying antique cameras and old photos of the Great Depression. They even get to set out on their own photo mission and submit photos for class to see.
