The Orff instrumentarium is a crucial piece of what brings our music program to life. Students learn the elements of music by playing games, exploring language and poetry, singing, developing rhythms through speech and body percussion, and playing melodies and accompaniments on pitched percussion (xylophones and metallophones). These instruments were developed specifically with children's musical development in mind. Bars can be removed to ensure that improvised melodies are harmonious, using pentatonic scales. The technique is simple enough for the youngest children to grasp, but remains compelling through the upper grades as complexity is increased. The timbre of the metals with the woods, and the range of deep bass to the bright glockenspiel, create a rich array of musical moods that children can take part in arranging, creating their own unique musical compositions in small and large ensembles. Students will use these instruments to express poetry and drama, to accompany dance and songs, and to learn collaborative music-making ensemble skills. Study after study shows the benefits of music for children's intellectual development across subjects as well as their social and emotional development. These instruments are brilliant tools in bringing a thriving elementary music program to life.
