Being able to read is extremely important for the success of all students. Due to the pandemic, learning was lost across the board. Specifically at my school, students were taught virtually during the entire 2020-2021 school year. This caused a great deal of loss of learning and lack of reading books- students just did not have access to physical books at home. As we return to the building, it is especially important for my scholars to have access to books. They need to hold books, read books, and flip pages of great writing that will creatively take them into another world! We have to read, baby, read! By having books and magazines in my classroom library, my scholars will be able to have a specific time in writing class dedicated to reading materials by authors that look like them. By having access to these books, my scholars will be able to see what good writing looks like and how they can incorporate those skills into their own writing. What's more, I wish to create a classroom library of books on topics and ideas that my scholars will love. This will create the perfect cycle of reading and writing at a high level and make up for the learning lost caused by the pandemic- something my scholars will achieve with a set of culturally relevant books.
