I am working on incorporating a budgeting and personal finance program into my classroom to teach students the importance of a budget and to help with classroom management. To reward students for participating, working hard, and keeping up on everything I am incorporating a classroom store where they can purchase items after receiving their "paycheck", paying rent, and paying fines. Some of the items they are able to purchase will include giftcards, games, sports items, and hopefully much more. This budgeting program will give students the opportunity to earn class money for attendance, completed homework, projects, class jobs and earn extra for good behavior while also having to pay a monthly rent for their desk, internet, AC, heat, and garbage. It is my hope that this will teach them to budget and spend wisely. They will have to use checks to pay and keep track of everything in a registry. After all their bills and fines are payed I want to have a "store" available for them to spend what they have left. The purchased materials will be used in that store. Each item purchased, including the giftcards will be available for students to "purchase" with money they have leftover in their budget at the end of each period. The only way they can purchase from the store is if they have payed all of their bills and fines and have accurately kept track of them.
