Learning to read challenging texts is hard work and requires serious brain power, and studies have shown that students who sit the majority of the day are more lethargic and lose their ability to concentrate. Sedentary students also may more likely distract themselves or others. Students who are able to stand during part or all of a class period strengthen certain areas of their brain to improve memory, cognitive skills and the ability to receive and digest new information. This is exactly what my students need and want to improve their literacy learning! I have tried out standing desks with some students with great success and need help supplying the rest of my classroom.
