Our students are in classrooms for 6+ hours a day with little to no natural light. Lack of natural light can make students prone to eye health effects and poor reading performances. Many studies have shown benefits of reading in natural light to include better focus as well as adding a relaxing beauty to the room. Having a comfortable environment to read that is illuminated with natural light without outside distractions helps foster a love for books and learning. My library has a huge wall of beautiful windows that look directly on our playground. While this sounds like a wonderful aesthetic to the library, the distraction of seeing other students running and playing outside while trying to focus on reading inside is not realistic. To ensure students are experiencing quality library time with minimal interruption from outside sources I currently have gray, metallic mini blinds that remain closed during our library specials rotation. Applying the privacy window film to the library windows and removing the current blinds will allow natural light to enter the library while providing a beautiful, relaxing environment. This will also minimize distractions from outside influences where my students can focus their attention on enjoying their books.
