The pandemic took away many hands-on experiences for students. Being isolated also made there be a need for a lot of social and emotional supports in the classroom. A sensory table will help me support my students in both ways. Creating hands-on experiences pushes lessons from short-term memory to long. So when we discuss things (like rocks, sand, snow, bodies of water, and much more) I have a place where students can get hands-on and physically feel what they are learning about. They will be able to have every sense used while learning. The sensory table will also be used as a calm down area in times of high stress. Movement and textures help calm the mind, soothe anger, and decrease anxiety. All things students need today.
