It is my first time teaching AP Literature and Composition and I am seeking copies of Les Misérables that match the small collection that I have inherited. The class historically has maxed out at about a dozen students, but this year due to shifts in our master schedule and course availability, I will have at least 20 students. All of the novels that I am going to inherit are in sets of 5 to 10, and while that may work for most of our novels this year, I cannot offer any text as a whole class reading at this point. The free, online versions of Les Mis are either the entire unabridged copy (well over 1,000 pages) or a different translation. Our first longer fiction unit focuses on character development, setting, and conflict through the text; Jean Valjean and Javert are the perfect pair to highlight and analyze with my students. The novel (and musical) show the intricacies of both the protagonist and antagonist as they deal with their conflicts against each other and within their own hearts. While they will need to practice the writing skills for the AP test, I intend to have them practice citing the text using multiple learning styles as well through art and technology. All of our lives will be made easier if each student has his/her/their own paperback copy of the book instead of half with a book and half using a digital text with no page numbers. It will also help so that I can say something as simple as, "Check out paragraph two on page 46," and know that they will all see the exact same thing!
