The classroom carpet is a place where my students and I come together to encourage them to learn to love reading. We sit in the floor together and read wonderful books every day. The carpet in my room isn't just for the love of reading! The carpet is where we do experiments. One of the students favorite experiments each year is to test if a pumpkin will sink or float. Another is when we test to see how blubber protects animals from cold arctic waters. The carpet is where we measure ourselves to see how our height measures up to the wingspan of the largest fruit bats or the height of an Emperor Penguin. Lastly, the carpet is where we celebrate birthdays but we also learn about each others families, and we build up and encourage each other to take risks in our learning. It's a place where we learn that mistakes are okay; mistakes make us better learners. And, it's a place where we learn we're all part of a team. This Owl-phabet carpet is where we'll learn to love reading and make lasting friendships.
