Mostly English language-learners (ELL), my students are eager fourth graders who are in an all-girls after school club. The girls are curious about their surroundings and in need of a creative outlet to express themselves. They are smart and sweet children with very few resources available to them. During the school day they receive no formal art education and therefore have few opportunities to be creative. Our school is a large New York City public school where there are not enough art teachers. Due to the poverty of the surrounding community, the children are not afforded much of an opportunity to engage in the arts.
