Flexible seating allows students to have choice in what seating allows them to learn the best. While flexible seating research is not as extensive as other factors, a study in 2015 was able to conclude that “student choice within a space” accounted for 1/4 of the total academic improvement. As a teacher, I can testify to the fact that student reading is increased dramatically when students are given the option to read in a more comfortable setting. In their quest for knowledge, flexible seating allows students to have the ability to control one environmental factor impacting their learning. Students, especially fourth graders, have minimal control over light, temperature, noise, etc. Flexible seating gives students choice. Our district provides wobble stools and hard stools, but doesn’t provide them a soft alternative in seating. Students with sensory issues often have troubles with wobble stools and seating that is too firm. In addition, flexible seating provides options during floor time activities. Older students and students who are larger often struggle to sit comfortably cross cross on the floor. Flexible bench seating allow the teacher to provide close up spaces for them to actively participate.
