Drumming, music, and art are universal and inclusive activities that build community and enhance positive emotions. I want my students to use drumming to release contained energy and enable self-expression. Through the use of drumming and percussion instruments, my students will build skills in stress management, teamwork, focus, leadership, and creative expression. What we'll do: Once we get obtain some instruments, our class will have weekly drum circles that are teacher led, at first. Through the UCLArts & Healing Initiative, I have completed training in the Beat the Odds program. I plan to facilitate circles using what I learned through this program, but I would like this activity to eventually become student led. Having the ability to use drumming as an outlet will engage areas of the brain that will crowd out stress, grief, and pain. It will allow them to be in the present moment and encourage calm and relaxation.
