Students need a calm, comforting classroom to walk into each morning. When I arrive at school, I need time to drink my coffee and visit with coworkers. I feel overwhelmed walking in to work placed on my desk and being expected to immediately start working on it. That is how our students feel coming into the classroom and immediately being handed work after being rushed out the door to get to school. I would love to provide materials for my students to have a "soft start" morning. My favorite part about a true "soft start" morning is allowing students to have a choice in what activity they do each morning. It is also a great time to allow for socialization first thing when they arrive. Working with other students and sharing matierals enhances social emotional learning and builds classroom community. Students can listen to music and choose a calming activity before we dive into our morning meeting. Walking into a calm classroom where students are given choices and feel safe with their classroom family, will set everyone up for a successful day. The metal rolling cart creates an organized one stop spot for students as they enter the classroom. This will serve as a place to drop off papers and pick up the materials they would like to use that morning. Activities provided for a "soft start" morning include games, arts and crafts, and STEM material. There will be a variety of classic board games and educational games. Students also have the choice to read, write in journals, or work on iPads.
