So many adults will tell me that they hated math as students. My goal is to change this attitude! I want math to be a time of exploration, cooperative learning, discussion, and practice. Math is fun when students feel safe and confident and are given the time needed to learn. My list of requested math manipulatives will help my students understand the "hows" and "whys" of our math curriculum. Math is not completing worksheet after worksheet. Math is learning about our world using concrete, hands-on materials and methods to understand the abstract. The Geoboards, Rekenrek Build-a-Set, UniLink Cubes and other materials I’ve requested will help my students understand shapes, sides, and vertices. These manipulatives will also help them mentally visualize math facts and understand place value, and help me to teach place value and time during whole group instruction.
