Science literacy is in jeopardy. The misconception of science as a purely empirical, independent practice has led to the neglect of scientific literacy practices in the classroom that are collaborative, engaging, and relevant. As a white female in a profession that is 80% both white and female, it is especially crucial to provide my students with readily-available reading material that reflects their diverse identities and experiences. There are numerous peer-reviewed studies illustrating the link between students’ academic success and their overall literacy. Teaching my kids how to authentically engage in science material through interesting, diverse texts is crucial to their education as scientists and as consumers of information in today's technology-rich world.
