The truth of the matter is, our classroom is a bit outdated – okay, VERY outdated. It is challenging instructing students on how to prepare for life after high school when nothing within our room mirrors their soon-to-be reality. I would like to do away with the “assembly-lined” desks and provide our students with a setting that will promote flexibility, peer engagement, and learner autonomy. It is my hope to welcome our students into a space that encourages creativity and feels safe enough to face new challenges and dream. Committing to a program centered around the expectation of attending college and/or entering the workforce can be quite daunting at first and requires a great deal of vulnerability. The best thing I can do to support them through this transition is to make our classroom a place they want to be. The purchase of these desks and chairs will also allow our students the privilege of variability and movement which may help alleviate some of the challenges we are expected to face after over a year of virtual learning. This year, reading will be emphasized within our program as it is an essential skill needed for college readiness. The Kindle and ottoman seating will be three of many additions to our new reading nook, designed to promote and encourage recreational reading in the classroom. Students will have the option of reading digital books through the use of the requested device. I am confident that these changes may be just the spark our students need to return to campus motivated and excited to learn.
