Some of the best practices for ELL learners is to have experiences that involve multi-sensory and hands-on approaches. This is also true of early childhood learners and those with a lack of educational or instructional experiences. The materials I chose will be used in small group interventions, during center-based activities, for individual practice, as well as large group, core instruction. The materials will be used in my classroom throughout the entire year by all students. The materials chosen will assist in the acquisition of phonological (sounds) and phonemic (written) skills needed in reading readiness. All students need to be able to "hear" the individual sounds in a word before they can read it or spell it. The alphabet kit will allow students to see and hold the items, giving a name to them, and associating it with a sound the name produces. The set of tile activities focus on rhyming words, beginning/initial sounds of words, and ending sounds. This is a natural progression of phoneme/sound discrimination and identification. The activities include colorful picture tiles that will grab the students' attention and allow them to "visualize" the words. This will build their English vocabulary. The Wikki Stix activity will allow students to begin the transfer of hearing individual sounds to associating them with a written letter. That's what phonics in early kindergarten is all about!
