Third grade is that year that the students go from needing help with almost everything to becoming more independent. It is also the first year that they have to take state standardize tests at the end of the year. One key component to becoming good readers is listening to grade level appropriate materials and then being able to respond appropriately. Examples of literature that my students will be using the listening center to listen to include fiction, non-fiction, poetry, fables, and many more. The students will then use the literature they listened to to do things such as compare and contrast, infer, and even look at multiple different points of view of the same subjects. In third grade we also work on specific language skills such as synonymous, antonyms, multiple meaning words, and so much more. Some of the materials that I have requested are activities that will help build these skills while also using the listening center that we used earlier in the day during our daily reading time.
