A sensory support or sensory strategy is any equipment or technique that increases or decreases sensory input to help a student to focus and learn. I have a class full of sensory seekers who need sensory input in order to stay seated for more than 10 seconds. Sensory breaks are written into most of my students Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs) and are a vital support to meet their educational goals and needs.
The goal of using sensory strategies is that they will help the student to reach the level of alertness they need to attend and focus on their learning in class.
Most of my students benefit from swinging, jumping, and other sensory materials. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, my school site does not allow me to utilize our playground, sandbox, and has no adapted swings for my students. By providing them with a swing, crash pad, and sensory tiles in the classroom, they will be able to safely increase their learning potential by meeting their sensory needs.
