Getting students to read is a skill that will help them in every other area of their lives for the rest of their lives. In addition to benefiting them cognitively, reading is a way for them to experience a world they may only see on t.v. or hear about. Many students (my own children included) make decisions about their futures based solely on what they know and what they have experienced. Sometimes those experiences are beneficial. But for many students, that experience is incredibly limited and limiting. The goal is always to get good quality and varied reading material into the hands of our students and future leaders. We have local libraries, school libraries and, in most cases, classroom libraries. What we don’t always have are magazines. These requested magazines also serve the dual purpose of providing print and text features to support struggling readers and disengaged readers.
