The goal of this project is to give my students a way to begin their morning that includes choice, challenge, and a little excitement about coming into the classroom. I hope to provide activities which will be engaging, have no pressure of grading, and foster community among my students. Learning can only happen when students feel comfortable making mistakes, and that comfort will be fostered during Morning Choice. Morning choice aims to help students relax, work and play together, share ideas, make connections, and ultimately ease into learning for the day. Morning Choice will occur during the first 20 or 30 minutes of the day. It gives students time to get settled into the classroom. Students will be provided with intellectually stimulating games, puzzles, challenges, and activities which they can choose from. They may work and play in small groups, pairs, or on their own, depending on how they feel that day. Students often feel they have little control in their day both in and out of school. Morning Choice aims to provide a little control over how they start their day in our class, and gives them time to decompress, calm down, and mentally prepare for the exciting learning they have ahead.
