I have requested 2 specific math manipulatives for this project. In my opinion, these are the 2 most important pieces to any math program. The base-10 blocks are an essential part of any math program, beginning with the youngest learners. Students need to solidify their understanding of the place value system in order to be successful in math. The base-10 blocks allow them to physically compose and decompose numbers. They are able to see that 10 ones make a 10 rod and that those two have the exact same value. This allows them to begin to create an understanding of number composition as well as basic addition and subtraction.
The fraction tiles are very important to help create basic fraction understanding as well as fraction equivalency. Students are able to use the tiles to find all the fractions that are equal to 1/2(a benchmark fraction) and then reason to make statements about fractions that are greater than or smaller than.
These manipulatives will be part of my everyday math block. They will be stored in organized containers so that students can have access to them during instruction or when they need the extra support. They will be used during independent time and can also be used for assessment purposes.
Concrete math understanding begins with manipulatives! Students need to touch, to explore, to create in order to become life-long math thinkers and learners.
