Calculators have become an essential tool in math. Gone are the days where everything is calculated by hand. As my middle school students work on learning new concepts they also need to expand their calculator skills. Calculators are only as good as their operators. Students need lots of practice to know how to type in a variety of problems. Calculators are an essential tool for complex algebraic problems to being able to calculate tips or taxes on a daily purchase. Spending time throughout the year teaching students how to properly work a calculator will pay off for a long time to come, not just through their academic careers but also through their adult lives. Each student should have the ability to practice now so that they are masters by the time they leave school.
