Whether students are at home or in the classroom, these texts will allow us to have conversations about equality, racism, and justice. My students will hear stories of students who look like them who have overcome challenges and promote building community among all students. These books model the values of friendship, respecting yourself and others, and more topics for discussion to create a safe place in the classroom. They share stories of children who feel different from their peers because of their names, skin color, hair types, or life experiences. Our classroom will use these texts as a starting point for discussions about lived experiences, problems we see in our community, how to create inclusive communities, and for responding to injustice around us.
