My students attend a regular neighborhood high school for grades 9-12. They are in a self-contained class for students with severe and profound mental and physical handicaps. They range in age of 17-22. All but one of my students are non-ambulatory and require adult assistance for accessing their environment and feeding. Two of these students are fed via a gastrotomy tube. They are all non-verbal and communicate through non-symbolic means such as:gestures,vocalizations,sign language and or with assistive technological communication devices. They learn like everyone else and have access to the general curriculum with modifications and accommodations that supports their individual learning needs.
