Our students will get the hands-on experience of raising Brook Trout in the classroom and then releasing them in a local stream in partnership with Trout Unlimited and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. In class or virtually, students will use this project to learn about the scientific processes by journaling and collecting data, cells as the eggs begin to develop, biotic and abiotic factors affecting ecosystems as we explore the specific areas Brook Trout live, the changes in populations of a biological community as we look at the needs of different animals, and that relationships exist between ecosystem dynamics and human activity. This is a sustainable project that will last years in the future and hopefully will spark intrinsic motivation in our students to care for their local environment.
