Dr. Montessori had a whole geometry curriculum separate from math. In her geometry curriculum students not only learn the names of shapes and how to calculate area and perimeter, but they also learn these things through discovery. Given the right tools, students can discover the rules of geometry for themselves and won't have to memorize anything! With our compasses, t-squares, and L-squares, kids can work through lessons that let them discover formulas for area of a triangle, learn how to draw regular polygons of any size and demonstrate the equivalence of different shapes. Possibly even more important than the geometry they will learn, students will improve their ability to focus and strengthen their fine motor skills as they learn to construct shapes with their tools. They also will gain confidence and an appreciation for beautiful work.
