None of my students have ever had the opportunity to learn through hands-on dissection, and that is what they all continually ask for. They have also never used a microscope or have been able to create microscope slides of things around them. My students have a genuine curiosity about science and living things in particular. I want them to have the tools necessary to fulfill their curious minds and continue to have them learn and ask more in depth questions about their world. I teach in a rural area and my students suffer from not getting all the benefits the larger schools get. I am the only high school science teacher at my school. I teach all grades, 9th through 12th, and my main goal as a science educator is to give my students every opportunity imaginable to learn about what they are interested in. Every one of my students has asked me, “When can we dissect stuff?” “When can we use microscopes? Will you teach us how to use microscopes? Can we look at our skin under a microscope?” Unfortunately, I do not have all the tools to allow my students to fully engage in what we are learning. Virtual dissections are not as engaging and appealing to students, but dissection specimens are too expensive to purchase on my own. Microscopes are a crucial tool in science and my students do not have any to use. I do not have even one microscope to use as a demo for them. I cannot purchase everything my students need on my own. I use several hundred dollars of my own each year to purchase lab materials for my students. Unfortunately, some items are too expensive to purchase on my own. I appreciate any help I can get for my students.
