We use student choice with books every day in our classroom to enhance instruction and to reinforce 5th grade reading standards, like finding main ideas; creating summaries; discovering figurative language, vocabulary, character traits, etc.; and using them as mentor texts for student writing samples. By just October, my students are usually begging for more time with their independent reads! While we are so lucky to have a fabulous school library, many of the favorites have waitlists, so having a strong classroom library with books the students love assures that everyone will have something wonderful in hand. It also is crucial, because when students aren't able to check out books from the library and don't have them at home, they can still participate in class with my books. My classroom library is a place that brings joy, excitement, belonging, and wonder to my students! We utilize a class economy, complete with classroom jobs, so I have students in each group responsible for the library. My books are always treated with care and respect, and it allows the space to continue to be successful and vital to our classroom community. We hope you will help us in ensuring that our students find more ways to make sense of their reading skills, their world, and to, most importantly, create lifelong readers and critical thinkers!
