In Montessori we do not use textbooks but instead give intimate, hands-on lessons that lead children to utilize books within our classroom environment. We spark their imagination and give them the freedom to rely on our classroom library to support research and exploration. The literature we shelve in our multi-age classrooms, supports a wide range of reading levels. Our room houses first through third graders, but their reading levels range from nonreaders to those reading at a seventh grade. If we are able to acquire leveled books, children can easily attain information that is within their scope. I am a newly certified Montessori teacher, and I saw the immediate need when I glanced at the shelves and sought to support my struggling readers. These books will be used for follow-up work, research and to read for pleasure. When a child learns to read, you light a fire within them. I want to be the one who sparks that fire within the children of my classroom.
