Our third module in reading class focuses on the American Revolution, where students learn about white settlers' fight for independence from Britain rule. While there is much great information about the colonists in this unit, there is little in the way of diverse perspectives of the time. A class set of the novel Chains will highlight a different plight during the Revolutionary War, allowing the focus to shift from white settlers to slaves during the late 1700s. Allowing them to see how the war for independence affected many people in various ways will enable students to become even deeper thinkers, examine history from a different lens, and develop a deeper understanding for other ethnicities caught in this particular war.
