After over a year of distance learning during a global pandemic and surrounded by social unrest next years 5th graders are entering the school building with more urgent emotional needs than ever. Students will be bringing a lot of new trauma into the classroom and they need a calming learning environment to help them heal and be ready to reintegrate into in person learning.
My goal is to build two "relaxation stations" with comfortable, flexible seating and calming lighting and other features. They will include beanbags, a couch, lap desks, comfortable lighting and other features to which will help create a calm and less formal learning environment. With students returning after a year of trauma it more important than ever for them to have an environment which supports their emotional needs to they can achieve their academic goals.
I have purchased many of the items I am going to use already, including a couch, a diffuser and other decorations for the spaces but I would love some help on the final push to really make the spaces what the students need when they return to in person learning!
