Thank goodness for classroom progress! As an educator, my classroom is constantly evolving. One of the biggest changes that we have seen over the last couple of years is that a large amount of curriculum is online. Students use devices in my classroom everyday. Whether it is individually or in whole group. A good part of my two-hour Math block is spent teaching with laptops. Headphones have become essential to individual and small group work in the classroom, allowing students to work and learn at their own pace. My students are encouraged to bring in headphones or earbuds from home for our online lessons that have sound. However, some parents cannot supply them for whatever reason, and throughout the school year they easily get lost or broken in the bottom of the "black hole" that is a 6th grader's book sack. The students need their headphones daily. We have interactive software components that teach or review the topics we are going over in Math. They are perfect for 6th graders because they are like cartoons. I also love to use station groups in class to be able to see each of my student's work in a one-on-one setting. I call the stations M.A.T.H. M is the "make it" station where students make foldables or manipulatives to help them practice. A is "activity". They may play an online or in person game. T is "technology". This is usually an independent work station on the laptop that incorporates a video or interactive game. The headphones keep this group from disrupting over groups. Finally the H group is "help". This is the station where I get to support my students'' learning with one-on-one help. So each year I buy headphones or earbuds for the students that do not have any.
