Students will gather in groups with the teacher or peers to read historical fiction picture books. This gives them background knowledge and enables students to make connections with American history content. Imagine struggling readers eagerly reading about American history and becoming so interested that they seek out similar books at the library, even those that may be challenging to them. I've seen success with this approach. A student grew from a beginning reader to asking for books above grade level last year! We need more books to facilitate this process.
