This year will be my first as a math and computer science teacher. Help me kickstart my classroom! I want to create an environment marked by attention to students' identity and a dedication to efficiency and creativity. Decorations: These are key pieces that theme students' experience. Ada Lovelace is known to be the first computer programmer; she was a self-starter and problem-solver, and an excellent role model. The hard drive patent print doubles as a visual aid to help students understand how it works. I also want to maintain a white board where I will update with happy quotes. My students come from all over the world, so the inflatable globe will help us embrace that diversity. Finally, the twine strings will make a Cartesian grid on my ceiling! Manipulatives: Counters and magnets allow students to build non-linguistic representations of what we do in math. I also want a wireless mouse that will be far from my desk, one that students will take over to present their ideas to the class. Patty paper is very helpful when it comes to transformations in geometry. The abacus is a traditional Chinese math tool that helps to explain place value. Supplies: Because this is my first classroom, I will need some basic office items (sharpener, file organizers, tape dispenser, push pins) to keep the gears turning! The vacuum will allow students to have occasional foods in the room (which we otherwise cannot allow due to a serious ants problem). The pug light will serve as an indicator when someone leaves for the restrooms. Crafts: Literacy and communication often get overlooked in STEM courses. I want my students to have a creative space where they can practice presenting ideas in a professional manner. The color pencils and stencils help students to do exactly that.
