Children are our future, and classrooms should be the place that they feel safe, heard, and represented. As a first year teacher, I have researched and carefully selected a variety of books with characters that represent a diverse population. Not only will children see characters that look like them or share a common culture, but they will also be exposed to people and cultures that they may not have been without this literature accessible to them in the classroom.
Did you feel represented by the books that were available to you as a child? Do you tend to put a greater emphasis on books that you feel represented in? I want every child who steps foot into my classroom to know instantly that they are safe to be who they are. I dream of a classroom where we can freely share our cultures, traditions, and individuality proudly. These books will help to start these conversations that are so important on the path to acceptance!
I plan on doing a "book a day" project in my classroom where we do a read aloud and post one book for each day that we are in school. I know that the titles I have selected will help me to complete this project and expose my students to the wonderful world of reading!
