In an effort to establish more opportunities for students to create, I am teaching a Creative Writing Class for my High School Students. Beginning with the Children's Classic Novel "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," I will be leading my students on a year-long exploration of the elements of Novel Writing, with them ultimately writing a novel of their very own. They will be studying contemporary literature at different levels of difficulty to better understand the crafts of Character Development, World Building, Plot Development, and Story Telling. They will read different genres, different authors, and at different levels to better understand how these elements work together in a piece of literature. Using modern texts like "Shutter Island" engages the students because it's not a story they have heard or read or been lectured about before. It is new, it is modern, and it is still exciting.
