In the state of Colorado the educational gap is ever-widening, and the disparities in educational funding are staggering. For our students at Cole, not only are they battling issues of access and opportunity, but they are also facing challenges stemming from a severe lack of resources. The students of Cole have always, and will always, deserve an excellent education. It is our belief that educational opportunities should exist, and be provided, outside of the set school day. Our middle school and high school students lack a safe, constructive space to spend time after school, which results in an increase in students being at risk for violence and other problematic situations. Providing arts-based after school programming supplements work we are doing during the school day, allows for visual arts programming, helps us integrate with our surrounding community, and gives us the opportunities to leverage the 6-12 model in providing a space where MS and HS students can be together. The Maker’s Space will be a community space where students can learn music production skills, explore creative writing as a way of self-discovery, and experience visual arts instruction that is not available during the school day. It will be a space where students can eat, relax, and safely be in a community with one another. It will be a space where students seeking academic support can find help from teachers and peers, thus working to close the math and literacy gaps that currently exist in our school community. Access to food, peer homework support, and arts-based programming are staples of high performing, and well funded districts. We believe that they should be staples in our school as well.
