I taught "regular" high school for many years, and even with those student demographics, it was difficult to find novels that the students actually wanted to read. These two books have proven to be tremendously popular with my at-risk students. These novels are incredible springboards for us to dive into related topics and issues. Using The Things They Carried, students also research various aspects of the Vietnam War, analyze lyrics of songs written during the time period, and learn about Vietnamese culture. When reading The Perks of Being a Wallflower, we focus on SEL concepts, such as setting boundaries, anger management, and conflict resolution. This is an incredibly important unit since the majority of our students are lacking in social and emotional skills.
