Stamina has always been an issue in ELA for 6th graders. They are suddenly required to read and write for sustained periods of time. While some students adapt to this over the course of the year, the process is much harder for students with AdHd and students with high energy levels. Many 11 and 12 year old students lack the maturity to sit still in a hard chair with a flat desk in front of them and read for 45 minutes or to write a two page story. This is why I want to introduce my students to flexible seating. Think for a moment about how you read or write for pleasure. Do you choose the hardest straight back chair in your house? No. You go for the comfortable seat, simply so you can enjoy it for longer. I want my students to learn to love reading and writing- to find pleasure in it, and a comfortable place to work will start them on this journey.
