The young adult novels that I have chosen will be read in my 9th grade English classroom during independent reading time. They all have themes relating to social injustice and tolerance of others because my school has a very diverse student population. The students will respond to the literature in written and oral discussions with their classmates. They will learn about each other's backgrounds and communicate with each other to improve their critical thinking skills. Through the use of literature as a stepping-off point, the students will make connections to others that they will carry throughout their lives. I chose young adult novels about social justice and tolerance that would broadly appeal to male teenagers since many are reluctant readers. I also chose two gift cards to Teacher Pay Teacher so I can buy engaging lessons with themes of social injustice/tolerance that would appeal to my diverse student classroom. I want to focus all aspects of my instruction on the overarching theme of social injustice/tolerance this year because I have found it to be a topic that engages the students, especially the teenage boys.
