The rug will sit front and center in our classroom. It anchors the room. It is where we hold our morning meetings, enjoy read alouds, discuss the calendar, and complete whole group reading lessons. My students can often be found on the carpet during their free play time, reading books, or completing center work. A rug is a home base in a classroom. We start our day here. We usually finish our day here as well. This is where we learn about more than just academics. We learn about each other. We grow as a family unit. I watch these 5 year olds grow exponentially in their first year of school. I see them learn their alphabet, letter sounds, and begin to read. I see them discover a love for math. I see them gain friends and confidence. Providing a rug is more than simply making our classroom look more inviting. It provides a safe, comfortable location for my students to meet everyday!
