Reading is one of the most essential skills any student needs to be successful academically. Empathy is one of the most important skills any person needs to be successful in life. One important question that is facing our society is what it means to be an American, and more specifically, an American of Color. Graphic novels, as a medium, allow students of all reading levels and English proficiency levels to read, learn, examine, and analyze complex ideas without feeling overly intimidated. These books will help all students, even the most reluctant readers, find more enjoyment in reading. And the topics of these books focus on real life social issues and experiences to help teach empathy and understanding such as identity, discrimination, immigration, parents' divorce, coming to America as a refugee, and so much more.
