Tuners help us bridge the gap between playing and listening by providing a visual aid for students to see whether or not they are in tune with themselves. By eliminating one of the variables surrounding listening, students who are learning how to listen effectively can easily bypass the first step and begin listening to their section or the ensemble as a whole. In a marching band it is especially difficult for young students to focus on intonation because there are many stimuli involved in outdoor performances. This new setup will facilitate a more efficient warm up routine among students. The clip on tuners will allow students to check their own intonation and pass it onto the next person without needing someone else to hold the tuner for them. As the fall semester progresses students will have an easier time finding their tonal center, but until then this visual aid will assist them in the stands and on the marching field.
