Throughout my first year of teaching, I have learned and observed the benefits of play based learning. If you are not familiar with play based learning, students build their communication skills, social emotional development, motor skills, creativity and imagination, and problem solving skills through dramatic and free play. Play based learning plays a huge role in our children's development in so many ways which is why this project is so important to me! Play based learning shows that children are motivated through play, which gives me the opportunity to infuse learning and play together to foster a child's love of curiosity, discovery and creating enthusiasm! When I started my first year teaching I was given many loved and well-used items from others to fill my classroom. Though I was blessed with the generosity of others, many of them were loved pretty hard this year by my class and the disinfectants used to clean my classroom with COVID. My current wooden kitchen has been ruined from the sprays and chemicals used to clean my classroom. After engaging with my students during play time throughout the year I have also noticed some things that I was missing in my home dramatic play area such as some fresh food, pots/pans and cleaning supplies. As a child, I also loved arts and crafts which is why I am wanting to provide my students with a dedicated art/craft space in my classroom. This past year, I did not have a daily space for students to go to during play to express their creativity through art. Providing a table and bench space for my students will allow them to freely go to and from the art center during free play. I cannot wait to better support my students through play based learning. Thank you so much!
